Classically trained as a guitarist, Karim Kahar discovered electronic music during his teenage years, listening to new wave and post punk bands. He then started to release his first records through collaborative projects and several aliases.

At the beginning of 2020, while living in Berlin, he began to conceive the universe of Slang through a hybrid sonic palette blending techno, UK bass and sound design. Slang is the expression of a personal dialect, an imperfect language of sorts made of disparate elements and points of tension between pure experimentation and the efficiency of club music.

Track by Track

« Conway » borrows its name from John Conway, the mathematician behind The Game of Life, a cellular automaton applied to the creation of the track’s erratic and nervous rhythms, imagined like a techno stomper powered up by the energy of a hardcore band.

« Harvest » was composed throughout a year and laid the foundations of the record through its mutant and undefinable structure, its accidents and field recordings pushed against detuned ambient tones.

« Orem » is Conway’s twin, a minimalist iteration designed for late night club play.

By leaving its synthesizers and drum machines randomly react to the track’s evolution, « Resist » confronts order and chaos to illustrate the feeling of losing control, between powerlessness and willful abandonment.

« Escaflowne » was inspired by a childhood memory and how memory itself fills the voids left by aging with blur, approximations and additions, turned into audio artefacts and glitches carried by distant and oddly familiar melodies.
